Only seven miles southwest of Miami, Coral Gables presents an old-world approach to luxury coastal living in South Florida. George Merrick, the man behind this so-called City Beautiful, was inspired by the romance and grandeur of Spanish castles. Under his watchful eye, he created and designed a master-planned, Mediterranean Revival community known for its meticulous zoning and historic preservation efforts.
Merrick's vision is especially felt in the local real estate market: palatial waterfront estates, impressive single-family homes, and even the condos bear signature Mediterranean Revival features. A sizable part of the market consists of older residences dating as far back as 1939— Coral Gables' early years. Median real estate value in the market falls around $1,285,000, while home prices range from the low $500,000 all the way to $40 million or more.
Coral Gables is spread across nearly 38 sq. mi. of total area— more than half of the city is water. Two main public transit options are available: Metrobus and Miami Metrorail. The latter has two stations in Coral Gables, connecting the city to Downtown Miami and the Miami International Airport with ease. There are several historic and cultural sites located throughout Coral Gables. These include the Merrick House at 907 Coral Way, where city founder George Merrick spent his childhood. The Coral Gables Art Cinema is a regional destination for both local and international art house Merrick House films. Fantastic rare plants are on display at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden. Not far is Matheson Hammock Park & Marina, which spans 630 acres bordering the botanical garden and features a man-made atoll.
